Laurence Kilcommons , shares his career story and some sporting achievements, as well as looking back on facing up to one of his biggest challenges.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your career to date?

I have a BSc Hons Degree in Quantity Surveying from Central
Lancashire Preston. I am Entrepreneur, I am driven by business, investing and everything else in between. I love thinking about the bigger picture and enjoy trying to predict what the future holds and how it might play out.

I am not afraid to take calculated risks and enjoy the problem solving of trying to make something simple and uncomplicated.

I have circa 20 years experience in building and property. I have worked Contractor, Client side and Developer roles within some of the leading National and North West businesses. I have learnt new skills and knowledge within each of these roles and I am very grateful for the opportunity.

I am totally committed to leading from the front, I am more than happy to make mistakes as long as I learn very quickly from them.

I am currently focused on trying to make Kilmal Maintenance and Projects a leading provider of Hard FM and Fit Out Services. I am also focused on investing in Property and Business. The Assets acquired will ultimately make the business stronger and less reliant on project specific cash flow.

In my spare time, I love to spend time with my family. I enjoy triathlons and have recently completed the Dubin and Majorca half iron man. I like to run and cycle and I need to learn to love swimming which I am working on.

I also enjoy reading, I like to read business books, study the mindset of successful people, different forms of leadership and customer service and the history and events of economics. I am studying to become a professional investor and a better business person.

What does your current role with the business involve?

I use my core skill set to estimate and appraise opportunities in maintenance, projects and property. I work closely with our Accountants managing the overall financial current and forecast position of the business.

I commit a lot of time to talking to existing and potential new clients about new opportunities. I passionately believe in collaboration and I’m very positive about sharing success. One of my favourite phrases is “If you find yourself more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence! I am heavily involved in marketing and general administration.

Describe your own style of management?

I like things done yesterday. I am my own worst critic and whilst I am not perfect by any stretch. I like to get things done quickly and efficiently. I lead by example and I am team player. I embrace and appreciate people that are prepared to leave everything on the field.

My proudest achievement is getting married to Michelle my wife and having two beautiful girls Erin and Connie, closely behind that is being born a Manchester City supporter, thank-you to my Dad for that……the Aguero moment will make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up for ever!!. I am proud of my family and I am also proud of how hard we work every day. I have many very dear friends that makes me very fortunate and extremely grateful.

I’m my own worst critic and although I have many milestones reached to date, passing my degree, becoming Chartered, setting up and managing several successful businesses, being part of many successful investments and developments.

The biggest challenge I currently face is what does the future looks like tomorrow? The biggest challenge I have faced to date is having the time I need to focus on everything I would like to achieve.

What advice would you give to a younger self?

Select a career that you are passionate about. Look for mentors that have already achieved or are currently achieving what you want to achieve. If you get the chance to work with the best offer your services for free if you have to. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, this is by far the best way to learn as long as you’re open to accepting a mistake has been made. The best entrepreneurs continue to evolve and are passionate about learning and developing their skill sets. Enjoy the journey, it is a roller coaster and there will be massive highs and lows but keep things in perspective, your doing your best and that’s all that matter’s and your family loves you dearly.
