Michael Maloney Kilmal Director, shares his career story…

Tell us a bit about yourself and your career to date.

I completed a degree in Building Surveying in 1999 and went onto working for a Property Investment company in Manchester where I gained RICS Chartership. Over the course of 9 years I became head of Building Surveying and completed some large projects and helped grow the property portfolio and value of the business. After working for the Property Investment company, I set up a contracting business with two partners. The business covered Refurbishment and Fitout projects across the Northwest and quickly the business grew and was successful. In 2017 I set up Kilmal a Maintenance and Projects business with my business partner. The business specialises in property maintenance and refurbishment and fitouts.

What does your current role with the business involve?

My role at Kilmal is mainly associated with the operational side of the business. In the main I plan works for our staff and engineers to meet the operational demands of the business and client requests. I programme and manage works and take financial management responsibilities for maintenance and projects as well as overseeing the helpdesk management of the business. I am in regular contact with customers managing their expectations and hopefully exceeding such expectations.

Describe your own style of management.

I would like to say that I am an approachable person who cares for others and have a friendly personality. I believe that if I treat people the way I like to be treated then I will build great relationships. I like to spend time with my team fully briefing them and communicating clear directions in a simplistic but professional way. I always ensure that colleagues and clients fully understand what I am communicating so we are always ‘on the same page’.

What has been your proudest achievement to date?

From a works perspective I have many proud moments from becoming a Chartered Surveyor to setting up my own company and being a finalist for Business of the Year.

Outside of work I am immensely proud of my family. I have three amazing children and a dog! I am proud to say that I have a 3 rd Dan black belt in Kickboxing, and I am a qualified Kickboxing instructor.

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced throughout your career?

I would probably say the biggest challenge I have faced and still facing is meeting and managing new people. Meeting new people with different personalities can be challenging. You must adapt to manage people and gain trust. This can be challenging but I believe that if you give everyone a chance and treat them respectfully then relationships will grow. Also managing client’s expectations can also be tricky. No two clients are the same and what is important for one person is not always important for another. The challenge is to understand people and then work out the best way of managing them whilst maintaining a relationship.

What advice would you now give to a younger self?

Treat everyone with respect and carry out work in a professional manner.

How do you relax or unwind outside the office?

For relaxation I like to do activities with my family and taxi my children around! I enjoy cycling when I get the chance and attend weekly Kickboxing classes as well as coaching children once a week. My family and I follow Manchester City football club which has been a very enjoyable time over that last few years, long may it continue. I also enjoy family movie time.

What sets Kilmal apart from the competition?

I believe we offer a fantastic service and are customer focused. We are flexible and will do our absolute best to help our
clients achieve their goals no matter how big or small. We take full responsibility of what we do, and we are easy to deal with.
